Western Alchemy’s Great Work Through the Prism of the Tarot’s Major Arcana
The Fool’s Journey as Alchemical Transformation
The Major Arcana journey, often called “The Fool’s Journey,” maps the soul’s evolution from raw potential to spiritual perfection. This progression mirrors Western Alchemy’s Magnum Opus, or Great Work, which transforms base metals into gold — or, symbolically, the unawakened ego into the realised soul.
Before the work begins, the Fool represents Prima Materia, the chaotic, raw starting material. He carries pure, unmanifested potential. In this sense, he is innocent, unformed and unaware of the journey ahead.
The Fool: Innocence and Raw Potential
The Fool starts his journey feeling excited, inspired and free. Because he has no experience yet, he doesn’t realise he’s about to walk off the edge of a cliff. Still, his energy runs high, and he carries only good intentions.
He feels a new opportunity opening up, and he stays hopeful about his ability to create anything he wants. In many ways, the Fool is the unformed soul beginning its journey, carrying a knapsack of hidden, unawakened spiritual tools — ready to be cast into the alchemical crucible.
The Magician: Claiming His Tools
Next, the Fool steps into a new mindset, becoming The Magician of his own life. He uses everything available to him — a cup, a pentacle, a sword and a wand — to create his dream reality. He believes in magic, and he trusts that by co-creating with the universe, anything becomes possible.
The High Priestess: Discovering Inner Wisdom
As he explores his metaphysical ability, he meets The High Priestess. She appears when we begin to discover the physical and spiritual world at a deeper level. Through her, he learns intuition and esoteric knowledge, and he starts to develop divine wisdom. She teaches him to notice the unseen as well as the visible.
The Empress and The Emperor: Mother and Father Energies
As he begins to question his path, his mother appears as The Empress. She embodies the Earth and everything connected to fertility, nurturing and abundance.
His father then appears as The Emperor, setting rules so that the path ahead feels safe and stable. He reminds the Fool of the value of tradition and structure — the kind that stands the test of time and keeps him grounded through his spiritual awakening.
The Hierophant: Learning Through Structure
The Fool then looks for teachers who can guide him more formally through spirituality. This leads him to The Hierophant, who teaches him about external cultures, societies and religions. Shaped by these teachers, the Fool continues to grow.
The Lovers: Finding Partnership and Balance
After spending so long alone on his path, the Fool craves companionship and looks for partnership. Through The Lovers, he discovers the joy that comes from union, and he learns to cooperate and balance his masculine and feminine energies.
The Chariot: Willpower and Drive
By now, the Fool understands how to succeed through willpower and discipline. He rides The Chariot toward his goals, confident that ambition and drive can help him achieve anything he wants.
Strength: Maturity Over Ambition
Through the courage he has built along the way, the Fool now possesses inner Strength. With it, he tames the unchecked ambition that carried him through The Chariot. He realises that battles can be long, and so he matures, learning to value self-control.
The Hermit: Retreat and Reflection
Having learned so much already, the Fool now seeks solitude to reflect on everything he has seen. He becomes The Hermit and retreats within, searching for understanding. During this time alone, he realises that everything connects — divinely planned by the universe.
The Wheel of Fortune and Justice: Fate and Consequence
Through the Wheel of Fortune, the Fool learns that everything happens exactly when it’s meant to. He accepts that we are all subject to fate, whether it turns in our favour or against us.
He also learns that the universe brings Justice to every action. This teaches him to act with integrity, knowing his choices carry consequences — whether through legal resolution or the quieter workings of karma.
The Hanged Man and Death: Surrender and Transformation
With this support around him, the Fool feels ready to surrender and pause. As The Hanged Man, he explores the world from new points of view, trusting that the universe will catch him.
At this pivotal stage, he experiences an ego death. The person he thought he was falls away, and he turns a new page, making space for fresh opportunity to enter.
Temperance: Patience and Balance
Once everything has been washed away, silence and peace settle in. Through Temperance, the Fool learns patience and balance, discovering that he doesn’t always need to chase the next thing. Sometimes, no action is the right action.
The Devil and The Tower: Confronting Attachment
Trying to move forward, the Fool discovers he remains shackled to his past — emotionally, financially and physically. Because these attachments limit his expansion, The Devil forces him to confront where he holds himself back and resists letting go.
The Tower then shakes him loose from these attachments, using forces beyond his control. It feels terrifying, as though the rug has been pulled from beneath him. Yet it works in his favour — a difficult but necessary gift from the universe.
The Star and The Moon: Light and Shadow
The Star illuminates this moment with hope and renewal, offering the light at the end of the tunnel. It inspires the Fool to shine his own light and step into his true self.
The Moon, however, represents the Star’s opposite. It reveals subconscious programming and old fears that resurface just as he tries to embrace this new sense of bliss. Its light casts a shadow of a shadow, surfacing old anxiety he must still work through.
The Sun: Renewal and Purpose
Once he works through these old fears, the Fool’s light expands, and he becomes The Sun. He feels fully renewed and aligned with his original soul purpose. His old ego falls away, and he now knows what he’s here to do — even illuminating the path for others along the way.
Judgement and The World: Completion and Rebirth
Like a final Judgement, no space remains for illusion or false identity. At last, the Fool rises to answer his soul’s calling.
This marks the end of the road. Having mastered The World, the Fool completes his journey. So many lessons have been learned, and a chapter closes once and for all. It’s time to celebrate every victory — but as with any cycle that closes fully, a new one opens, and a new journey begins.
