Overview
Handmade in the spirit of the monks of Mount Athos, this Orthodox incense blends frankincense with the sweet, luminous note of jasmine. Each tin holds 50 hand-cut pieces of livani, the Greek name for frankincense and the incense made from it, softly dusted and ready to be placed on glowing charcoal.
The lid is inscribed with the names of the four archangels, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel, one at each quarter of the circle. The name Silver Ladder recalls the imagery of spiritual ascent found in scripture and in Orthodox writing, where prayer is often pictured as a ladder rising towards heaven.

Energetic Essence
Mount Athos, a mountainous peninsula in northern Greece, has been home to Orthodox monastic communities for more than a thousand years. Its monasteries are known for a long tradition of incense making, blending aromatic resin with fragrant oils and rolling it into small pieces for use in daily prayer and liturgy.
Frankincense has been burned as an offering since antiquity and is traditionally associated with purification, prayer and the lifting of the spirit. Jasmine is often regarded as a flower of devotion, sweetness and the night. Together, and under the watch of the archangels, they create an incense traditionally used to sanctify a space and support quiet contemplation.
How to Use
Light a charcoal disc and place it in a heatproof censer or bowl half-filled with sand. Wait until the charcoal is glowing and covered with a fine layer of grey ash, then place one to three pieces of incense on top. Add more as the fragrance fades.
Burn in a well-ventilated space and never leave burning charcoal unattended. Keep away from children, pets and anything flammable, and allow the censer to cool completely before handling.
Craftsmanship
This incense is handmade in the traditional Athonite style. Resin and aromatics are blended, rolled and cut into small pieces, then dusted in a fine powder that stops them sticking together. The speckled appearance of each piece comes from the blending process.
Because every batch is made by hand, the size, shape and colouring of the pieces vary slightly.

Care Guide
Store the tin tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, which can soften the resin and fade the fragrance. For external use only, not for consumption. Charcoal discs are sold separately.
